Gummies: How Much to Take, How Long to Wait, and Why Edibles Feel Different

· 7 min read

Eaten cannabis is not inhaled cannabis at a different speed — it is a different experience with a different chemistry behind it, and treating the two as interchangeable is what produces the stories people tell about edibles. The good news is that nearly all of it is avoidable with two numbers and some patience.

Why edibles feel different

Inhaled THC goes from lung to bloodstream in seconds, largely unchanged. Eaten THC goes through the liver first, where a good proportion is converted into 11-hydroxy-THC — a compound that crosses into the brain more readily and is generally reported as stronger and more physical than THC itself.

That single conversion explains most of the differences: the long delay, the heavier body character, the much longer duration, and why milligram-for-milligram an edible is not comparable to a draw from a cart.

How much to take

  • Never had an edible — 2.5mg, which is usually half a gummy. Genuinely. It is a small enough dose to be a non-event, which is exactly what a first attempt should be.
  • Occasional user — 5mg. One standard gummy in most ranges.
  • Regular user — 10mg, and there is no hurry to go beyond it.
  • High tolerance — 20mg and up, but the returns flatten and the side effects do not.

Food matters more than people expect. On an empty stomach onset is faster and sharper; with a meal — particularly a fatty one — it is slower, gentler and often stronger overall, because fat improves absorption.

Practical rules

  1. Start low and wait two hours. Not one. Two.
  2. Eat something first if you want a gentler curve.
  3. Plan the whole evening, not the next hour. Four to eight hours is the real window, and you cannot shorten it once it has begun.
  4. Do not stack it on alcohol the first few times — the combination is considerably stronger than either alone.
  5. Never drive. The impairment outlasts the part that feels obvious.

Frequently asked questions

How many mg should a beginner take?
2.5mg — usually half a gummy. It is deliberately a small dose: the aim of a first edible is to learn how your body handles it, not to feel a lot. Wait two full hours before considering more.
How long do edibles take to kick in?
Anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, with the peak at 2 to 4 hours. On an empty stomach it is faster and sharper; after a meal it is slower and often stronger overall.
How long do edibles last?
Typically 4 to 8 hours, and sometimes longer at higher doses. That is the real reason to plan an evening around one rather than fitting it into a gap.
Why do edibles feel stronger than vaping?
Because the liver converts a good share of the THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which crosses into the brain more readily and is reported as more intense and more physical. The same milligrams genuinely do something different eaten than inhaled.
I took one and feel nothing. Should I take another?
Not until two hours have passed. This is the single most common route to an uncomfortable night: the second dose is swallowed at forty minutes and both arrive together at ninety.
What should I do if I take too much?
Somewhere quiet, water, some food, and company if you can. It peaks and then fades like any dose. Uncomfortable rather than dangerous — which is exactly why the starting dose is worth respecting.
